Lionel Messi scores goal No. 700 with audacious penalty kick Panenka chip in Barcelona-Atletico Madrid
Lionel Messi scored his 700th career goal on Tuesday against Atletico Madrid — and he did it in style. The second-place Catalan club met the third-place capital club at the Camp Nou, with Messi and company needing a win to jump back into first place. Messi was able to put his team ahead 2-1 early in the second half after Felipe brought down Nelson Semedo in the box for a penalty kick.
Messi, who hit the post in the first half with a gorgeous curling shot, made no mistake from the spot, going with a Panenka-style chip, sending Jan Oblak the wrong way. Take a look:
That’s one way to score your 700th. It wasn’t a forgettable tap-in from close but rather a cheeky, naughty chip that plenty will remember and one Oblak will want to forget. Messi also helped set up the opener with a curling corner kick that resulted in a Diego Costa own goal.
For those counting, that was his 630th goal for Barca, and he’s got 70 more for the Argentina national team. Now it will be interested if, at the age of 33, he can approach 800 career goals.
